What 144 Hz, 1 ms and IPS mean — and which numbers actually matter for smooth gameplay.

Table of Contents

Gaming monitors are full of numbers. Here is what each one means for you.

Refresh rate

Measured in Hz, it is how many times per second the screen updates. 144 Hz feels much smoother than 60 Hz; 240 Hz is for competitive players with powerful PCs.

Panel types

  • IPS — best colours and viewing angles.
  • VA — deep blacks, great for dark rooms.
  • TN — fastest and cheapest, weaker colours.

Size and resolution

24″ Full HD is the sweet spot for most players. Move to 27″ QHD if your graphics card can push high frame rates at that resolution.
